Spohn Tie Rod Adjusters wont go on

Ok so i got the stock tie rod adjusters off but the new Spohn Tie Rod Adjusters thread on for about 3/4 on both inner and outer rod but get stuck at about that point. Its just progressively harder to turn util that point and then i get too weak... Did anyone else have this problem???

I lubed the threads and wire brushed them.

The threads on the tie rods are messed up, rusted, ect. You need to get a die to clean up the threads. I forget the thread size, 5/8 fine maybe?

Other than that, you can buy new tie rod end.

Did you ever get your threads fixed? I now have the same problem. The alignment show destroyed my stock adjusters with a pipe and could not get the drive side free, so I purchased the spohn adjusters but need to clean up the threads. A friend has a 5/8 by 18 die to clean up the one side of the tie rod, but what about the inner?

I have the UMI adjusters, used new tie rods and no problems. New tie rods aren't that much money and worth it on a car thats 20+ years old. For what you'd pay for a 5/8-18 left hand die you could probably buy new ones anyway. But yeah when I took mine in to Tire Kingdom for an alignment they wrecked my stock ones with channel locks and then a pipe wrench. The tech couldn't understand why they wouldn't turn, but when you collapse then stock adjuster in on it self it just grips the tie rod tighter, freakin brilliant guy lol. When I got the car home I coated them in pb blaster and used a tie rod tool and like magic they turned freely but they were mangled up so bad I was scared they were gonna snap in two.

So, I am not the only one. I noticed the cost of the dies, so I was thinking the same thing since the prices at rockauto.com are pretty reasonable. Which tie rod brand did you go with?

Re: Spohn Tie Rod Adjusters wont go on

Yeah thats an oddball thread even if it was a common one like 1/2-13 or something the left hand thread is gonna command a premium. They were the white box special close out's I paid like 8 bucks a piece lol even so I've had them on for 10 months now with no problems and my car is my daily driver.... If you want quality ones definitely go with Moog, they pretty much are the only quality after market manufacturer of suspension parts but the price reflects that. All the cheaper ones are gonna have a plastic cup that the ball part of the stud goes into whereas the Moog has a metal cup. Also I have only good things to say about RockAuto I've ordered a bunch of parts from them and use them anytime I don't need something right now. You can also get really good deals when they have something on closeout, I got Moog struts for 20 bucks a piece when they go for 60 at the local parts store.

I have a set of Spohn adjusters on the bench on my winter to-do list. Good heads up here. I'll have to watch out for this problem.

Re: Spohn Tie Rod Adjusters wont go on

I had this problem with the Coleman adjusters I bought, which are the same type. Honestly, I just lost patience and he-maned them on. The shop had no problem adjusting them.

Re: Spohn Tie Rod Adjusters wont go on

Just cleaned up one of the outer tie rod no problem thanks to a friend with a 5/8" by 18 die. All of my tie rods seem solid so I am going to use a die on the outers, then soak and clean with a wire brush the inners. Hopefully, that works. Hate to through away more good parts since my tire shop messed up my adjusters.

Yes a 5/8 x 18 NF thread die/re-threader works just fine. The inner tie rod end is left hand threads so make sure you're using the correct left hand nuts in the Spohn kit. The tie rod connector has a notch to indicate the left hand thread side.
