this has been bothering me for a while

its not a big deal, but its kinda annoying.
when i am driving down the road (2 or more lanes each way) and go to change lanes, the car seems to want to fight me changing lanes until one front wheel goes over the center line or lane marker, then it pulls towards the next lane. once i am halfway over, it starts pulling the other direction until the front wheel crosses center, then it wants to push me into the lane.

it doesn't pull hard, but its definitely noticeable.

my theory is that either
a) i have excessive toe out
b) i have excessive caster
c) i have excessively sensitive hands

or

d) i am making the whole thing up

to put it another way, its like the car is trying to ride up a hill into the next lane, then once it crosses center, it is being pushed down into the next lane.
i guess it could be due to the crown in the road, but it does it even in a 8 lane (4 each way) highway.
i get the same effect no matter what road or how many lanes

im confused.

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

You definitely need to molest your steering wheel less and molest your shifter **** more!

Sorry - couldn't help it, and I'm sure you knew it was coming!

I was going to say road crown, but then you said 8 lanes - not sure we have those here in North Cacalacki!

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

each lane in a well traveled asphalt road will have ruts where the car/truck tires push the asphault down and away. If you are running wider tires, they will track more in these ruts and cause what you are discribing. My car does it.

You can have your alignment check if you want, but most likely it will have little effect on this occurance.

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

are 255 tires considered "wide"
obviously not in the f-body world, but to normal civilization...
most cars run 225 or smaller.
prius' have like 185 or something.

its not super noticable, but its definitely there, and if you drive the car you will notice it.

Wide tires (even 255's) will track the wore path & drift away from the road crown. My opinion is that it is normal. However, I would check the front steering and alignment.

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

I'd say it's fairly normal, but it can't hurt to have the allignment check. I know my car will practically drive itself with my 275s in some really bad ruts around town, especially with the brakes applied. Mine tends to track in the grooves on the interstate (asphault). Concrete interstates don't pull the car around as much (concrete doesn't groove the was asphault does), that's how I know it's the tires and not the alignment. Well, that, and obsessive allignment checks.

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

My 245s didn't do it, even with the bad toe out on one side, but my 275s do!

Road crown had more effect on my car though. In the county I live in, its kinda bad. Pulling left/right constantly. Once I cross county lines going into town, it goes away.

I know I need an alignment, just been putting it off because its not THAT bad. More of a road issue for me than an alignment issue.

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

I-985 in georgia is a concrete slap interstate and the road had gotten wavy so you felt like you were going up and down. Anyways instead of paving over it they ground off something like an inch to smooth it out. Well the grind groves are in the direction of travel and are not perfectly straight so there is a few spots were it is impossilbe to keep my car from tracking those groves and you get a little side to side, but definatly better than the up down the road did have.

You may want also check your steering gear box it may be too tight or too lose giving you a wierd feel, but like stated above its pretty normal and the tighter, sticker suspension just makes it more noticeable. Alot of cars do this but most don't have the road feel of a 3ed gen, even the 4th gen with the rack&pinion isn't as noticiable.

With the cost of these tires a alignment is always suggested though.

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

ok, well as long as im not the only one.
yeah, you can definitely see the ruts from the 18 wheelers that never leave our streets alone.
big shipping town, so there are ruts and potholes like you would not believe.

Re: this has been bothering me for a while

Mine does that too, even after new tires, new idler arm and an alignment check. Not so bad since I replaced the rear springs which were sagging but it is still noticeable. I kind of like the feel. If something changes I know there is a problem I need to find.
