Spohn Rack & Pinion Kit

Does this look like it could be the answer to all us AX's out there who want a rack & pinion that works just as good as the stock steering?

Re: Spohn Rack & Pinion Kit

its a manual rack, and does it have the proper travel to retain the stock turning radius? Looks good though,

According to Spohn, its 3.75 turns lock to lock.

*EDIT*: A quick search revealed that the stock steering is 3 turns lock to lock.

I was talking about the stock power steering. I found that info over on NastyZ28, the range of lock to lock boxes was in between 2 and 3 with a majority of them being 3 turn power steering boxes.

Re: Spohn Rack & Pinion Kit

im pretty sure the slow ration boxes in 3rd gens were either 2.75 or 3. But still, this rack is 3.75 turns, so it will work, but its not the best for a AX car, you need a faster acting system.

It's a big step in the right direction though.

ANyone know of a manual rack with a quicket steering ratio? I am about to buy this kit but 3.75 turn to turn is too much.

Re: Spohn Rack & Pinion Kit

do you mean quickest bolt in rack? Because there has got to be a manual rack and pinion setup with a quicker steering ratio. I am not worried about making custom mounting tabs to the K-member. Universal joints can be purchased as well as tie rod ends. Althought I wonder if all this trouble would end up costing more than Spohns setup which would then make that more appealing. Im just trying to think of turning the wheel almost two full turns to lock from center... seems kind of excessive.

Re: Spohn Rack & Pinion Kit

3rd gen quick ratio boxes are the 2.75 l-to-l units, offered as part of
the suspension upgrade option. (On birds, W-6 I believe.) Standard
ratio is 3.75. All are power assist. (I may be a bit off on the decimal
value, but its definitely less than 3, and almost 4 respectively.)

Re: Spohn Rack & Pinion Kit

Umm BMR sells one that is 3 turns lock-to-lock which seems more appealling the 3.75 or whatever the other one is. But if you are auto-X and want alot faster, then break out a hammer an tourch because custom is the way then.

Re: Spohn Rack & Pinion Kit

If this set up was faster, you'd have to be in a crazy high class to run it.
