Ultimate 3rd gen suspension-part 1
Re: Ultimate 3rd gen suspension-part 1
So I have found that my 91 Formula is a bit of a diamond in the rough and have been doing some work on it. So far I have put new headers on it, larger edelbrock runners and intake manifold, along with edelbrock heads and some procomp roller rockers, and a 58mm throttle body. After replacing all that I am having issues getting the car to start and I am sure I just have the timing off by about 180 degrees (which I am going to work on tomorrow). The next project for the car is suspension, not to be an edelbrock slave but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on this kit http://www.jegs.com/i/Edelbrock/350/52063/10002/-1 or if there are any better suggestions out there. I do not plan on racing this car all the time, I will certainly be taking it to the strip a time or two though. So I am open to suggestion and looking forward to some good feedback. Fear not fellas, the next project after suspension is the brake system and finding a good true duel exhaust.

Sam Strano.
If you talk with him and explain what it is that you're trying to accomplish, I think he'll be able to put something together for you that gives you what you need without including things you don't need.

Re: Ultimate 3rd gen suspension-part 1
I see a watts linkage setup from that company Norm posted. Would that be benaficial at all over the panard bar setup or are the changes in roll center negligable?

Re: Ultimate 3rd gen suspension-part 1
Properly set up, a Watts link makes the car behave more equally in left turns vs rights.
Roll steer effects are slightly different. Not necessarily better or poorer than a PHB, but different nonetheless.
A 3.5" range of roll center adjustment is significant. More than enough to warrant a change in rear sta-bar diameter. Probably more than the typical adjustable rear bar can compensate for.
Guy I know of from another forum changed his mind about the value of a WL over a PHB after driving a car that had its PHB swapped out for a WL. Before that, he admits that he never used to think a WL was worth the price . . .

i didnt get them there, but the bump studs i have and most that i have seen are 5/8, so you would also need a 5/8 rod end, which just happens to be the same size and thread as the tie rod ends are stock.

What's your opinion on Dymag Carbon Fiber wheels?
http://www.dymag-usa.com/automotive/#overview
Their wheels are less than half the weight of ours!

Re: Ultimate 3rd gen suspension-part 1
but whats the cost? these would probably be far beyond anyones reach here.
and for daily driving i wouldnt want to use these. makes sense for road racing and such.
i wonder how they hold up when using some nice wide MT stree radials and getting a nice launch. if the tires holds on the to rim the rim will experience some serious torsion.

Re: Ultimate 3rd gen suspension-part 1
Yeah i would not use these for the road (even though you can apparently use them for that) but i was thinking of getting a separate set of wheels JUST for the track (time trial circuit track, not drag). I think that's mainly what these are for, not drag.
As for the cost.. I agree a whole set is probly 2k+ .. ATLEAST.. so, not for the average enthusiast or even most thirdgenners would even pay for, but still, i am sticking to the notion of "ultimate handling" regardless of price :P
The weight reduction you get from this much reduced rotating mass is huge! This is purely race only .. Pair this with R1 BFG's (race rubber) and I can only imagine the cornering capabilities..

Re: Ultimate 3rd gen suspension-part 1
I wouldn't be surprised if the price exceeds $5k a rim. Those rims have GOT to be expensive.
Better off with a set of light weight aluminum race rims as far as the pocket book goes. Unless you have unlimited cash, in which case please do buy and tell us how they work out.

It's usually best to not act on one-sided information without knowing more of the story. Additionally, we aren't quite in a position to play the role of the legal system by judging as to what a member may, or may not, be doing outside of this forum that may or may not be legal. There is a process for that and ThirdGen.org is not exactly that process.
The issue that was partially aired here is a local issue between members of the SoCal groups as well as the SoCal forum - plain and simple - that did not belong in this thread. It's unfortunate that some seek attention by allowing whatever personal issue exists in the SoCal group and SoCal forum to spill into the technical sections.
The claim being made that a moderator censored Dean is not the entire story. In the SoCal forum, there was a recent post about recent Dyno Results from one of the groups in SoCal. Some tried to take the posted Dyno Results thread off-topic and derail it. Several posts were moderated - including Dean's. Moderation activity is logged and upon a quick review, I seen no "abuse" as claimed. When people make threats or insults, that's going to get moderated as it does not belong on this site and is against our simple policies.
What was not disclosed is that there has been a severe amount of drama posted to the Dyno Results thread, as well as the SoCal forum in general.
Posting to brag about crashing a reserved private event that was held at a local business, only to get escorted out of the business by management, is one of numerous drama posts that does not belong on this site. Posting to brag, or threaten, to arrive at a future meet with "friends" that would be interested in whatever behavior/activity of a SoCal group may or may not be taking part in is also another drama post that does not belong on this site.
Really, guys? This is the behavior that some in the SoCal group display that spills into the SoCal forum, and now onto our technical site. This is a small sample of the behavior that has been going on between some members of the SoCal group/forum and does NOT belong on this site. As the above stories were posted to the Dyno Results thread, they were moderated (removed).
This site is ThirdGen.org and not TruTV, MTV or Soapnet. For some reason, it's the same people in the SoCal forum/group that cannot get along with each other and stoop to such childish behavior for grown men. This behavior has been on both sides from the people in the SoCal forum/group as there's a split between groups. Both sides bare responsibility for this behavior. Dean has, apparently, taken a side in this matter. That's Dean's decision.
It's unfortunate that the actions between the SoCal groups, which is a local club matter, is airing and spilling onto this site and used to take technical content offline. Personally, I don't think it's a rational decision to withdraw technical content over personal issues that really don't belong on this site. The issues here are issues involving members in the SoCal forum and SoCal groups.
While the above is more of the story to help see what triggered this recent event, it's not even a fraction of the entire soap opera that has been the SoCal group/forum. It's just one storyline to illustrate the behavior taking place and is one to explain why some are upset. The local drama has no place on this site and has been stated umpteen times that it doesn't. However, some cannot play by the rules and some want attention to continue the drama that has been occuring between local members of the SoCal groups.
The people involved should be embarrassed for their behavior. However, given this has continued between the same people and the same groups in the SoCal area for some time (months to over a year), some, apparently, aren't.
This thread, and the other thread by Dean, have been locked as they were deliberately destroyed due to the drama involving some local groups/members of the SoCal area.
