bad shimmy in steering

i kinda fixed this but i still want to know what is causing it. when you go down the road, every once and a while it will start to shake the steering wheel, then it breaks out into a really violent shimmy. you still go straight, and if you apply the brakes it will take it out if you drop below 30 mph. the car did it before i took it off the road but not to often, then it sat 10 months waiting for a new engine, then it started to do it every 5 mins while driving. i replaced the idler arm and front struts. that did nothing. i decided to tighten the steering box and it worked unless you go over 40 mph then you can feel it wanting to go. please help me if you can

Your wheels could need rebalancing or your tires may have gotten out of round sitting around for a while.
