Reseal P/S Gear box???

My gear box is gushing fluid,(already replaced both hoses)I called the dealer and they said they sell a seal kit for about $60.00.But at 160000 miles I'm leary of just replacing the seals, has anyone done "just" a reseal on their p/s gear box. Also, now the steering binds when you try to turn the steering wheel quickly,I think that may be from running the pump low so many times,it's probably bad too now.

My old wagon has over 300K on it, and the seals in the steering gearbox were blown out. I was adding PS fluid every couple of days. I went to a GM steering gearbox rebuilder, and he sold me the seals I needed for $1 buck. Installed the selas and it has been tight and working fine ever since and that was about 3 years ago.

The shop is in Sun Valley and I just can't recall the name at the moment, but he builds steering boxes for all the GM lines and all the sprint cars etc. Will come to me later.

If you decide to re-seal your box, you need to be carfull on disassembly. If you scratch any of the sealing surfaces, you will have problems getting the box to seal properly. You also need to make sure the pinion (or sector shaft, depending on what you are sealing) is smooth. Rebuilt boxes can be had for $90.00 with exchange, but you need to make sure you have an F-Body specific box, and IROCs / T/As with 16" wheels have different boxes than F-Bodys with 15" wheels do. If you cannot find a local supplier, I'll be happy to sell you one (check me out at http://www.pssystem.com). Good luck.

The seal kit is available on wrenchead.com also, I did the same thing earlier this summer. $9 for the seal, dust shield, and o-ring for the input shaft. There's a $30 version that includes the Pitman arm shaft stuff also.
