subframe around steering box broken, any fixes?
subframe around steering box broken, any fixes?
where the bottom forward bolt of my gear box bolts through, the subframe has decided to fail about a 2inch round all around the bolt. the metal is just flexing around when the steering wheel is turned. is there anyway to weld metal, or any other method? or is my z28 ready to wreck?
thanks

Find an experienced welder and he/she should be able to repair it. I would add a new plate to make it stronger than original. Even if he doesn't though, just a good weld is usually stronger than the surrounding material when the appropriate filler is used.
Anything can be fixed. At the absolute worst a piece of that subframe or the whole thing can be replaced with a donor from the junk yard.

dont feel to bad about the subframe cracking around the steering box
years ago i worked in a place that fixed mercedes ..was a common problem with them as well seems the more camber you run the more common it is to crack

Global West makes a steering box support brace which eliminates flexing in this area. It is sold under p/n TS-14 for $46.95.
