what do ladder bars do...

hey everybody.
this may be a stupid question but what do ladder bars really do? My understanding is that they use your rearend rotation to push your tires into the ground. Also do they bolt in inplace of the LCA's? well thanx for the help

Ladder bars are a drag race only type of suspension. Because of the design, when used on the street, the rear suspension is very stiff. When one wheel goes over a bump the design forces the other wheel to lift also. On a race track this isn't a problem but in a street car it becomes annoying. A better setup for a street car is 4-link.

The third gens already have part of a ladder bar system. The torque arm is actually a 4' long ladder bar but because of how the rest of the suspension is designed it's not a true ladder bar system. The other problems with ladder bars on a third gen is ground clearance. I'm not sure how low it gets with the comp engineering setup but a typical system will requires modifying the rear floor pan for clearance.
