Trying to identify a steering box
Trying to identify a steering box
I found a box at a yard with casting number 26000525. The car was an '87 (maybe '86) with the RS/Z ground effects, but badging was gone, and so was the center console lid with RPO codes. It did have a 5 speed and a 305(350?) with TBI. According to the "statistics" on this site it appears to be a good chance that the box is a 2.25, but the spindles/knuckles are gone off the front, so it is difficult to get a fix on the locks. The box is internally stopped to about 2.75 turns lock to lock. So this puts in in the right zone to be 2.25 or 2.5.
My ultimate question is, where is the XH stamp located? I see a lot of reference to the "front", but what is the actual location? Any one with pictures of the actual stamp, or can someone at least post a picture somehow marking the area in question?
I found a spot on the "front" that I think may have the remnants of an XH, but can't say for sure if I'm really seeing that or if I'm seeing some surface corrosion that happens to resemble XH. Are there really no other identifying marks other than opening the box and counting? I see there is another number/letter code stamped into the box opposite side of the casting number. Does that pertain to anything?
I guess the last ditch thing I could try is to make one turn on the input and try to get a approximate measure of degrees at the output. That would tell me definitively regardless of any markings. Anything is better than the crappy 3.5 in the car now.
Thanks in advance.
