handles like a sponge on the higway
i took a little trip this weekend on the highway, and i was almost ****ting my pants. it was windy and i was being tossed all over the place...i pulled over to look at the tires and they were a little low lookin so i stopped at a gas station and filled them but the car did the same. it's always been a little loose but it hasnt been real windy for a while and that makes it 10 times worse. i changed the tie rods, centerlink and idler maybe 10k miles ago. bushings and ball joints havent been touched...i wasw wondering if they could cause this much trouble. and what about the rubber donut that couples the steering shaft? can that cause a lot of probs? thanks. oh another thing...if i hit ruts on a road they suck me right in...

Two things '85,
First of all the leather coupling on the steering shaft will wear and cause the sort of quirkiness you describe. On my Z28 I could not find a replacement for just the leather and the dealer wanted $150 for the entire shaft (attempting to give me the "shaft" in more ways than one!) so I just took the shaft out of the car and drilled out the rivets that held the leather coupling together. Next I opened the holes up to 5/16'ths dia. all the way through. Finally I installed aircraft titanium, low head heigth bolts in them and tightened them up real tight! Wal-La! took care of 90% of the drift that I had been putting up with ever since I bought the car.
The other thing would be to adjust the gear lash with the adjuster that is on top of the sector. Loosen the jam nut and turn the inner bolt with an allen wrench while checking the friction by moving the steeering wheel with the front end suspended.

LOW performance people should drive low performance vehicles!
