Horrible noise when hitting brakes.
When I hit the brakes, it makes this metallic noise. Like scraping two pieces of metal together and it smells like i've been roasting the tires off. It doesn't do it all the time, but usally when driving slowly and in town. The brakes are fine. Had them checked by 3 different places. What could this be?? It is very annoying and I don't feel safe driving the car.
if you've had 3 places check and they tell you it's fine and other than the noise you don't feel anything i'd drive it and not worry. i had a pontiac that sounded like the brakes were wore to the metal but every time i checked they were fine. never did understand that one, but other pontiac owners told me they had the same thing.

ok. but the thing is, when the car was new, it didn't do this, so it can't be nothing. could it be something else in the rearend? would it be worth replacing the pads, rotors, calipers? i was thinking it may be the parking brake also. if it were stuck would it do this?

I'm with ede on this one.. usually a brake shop will jump at the chance to replace things. I'm rather surprised they didn't!
That smell you might be smelling could indicate you've got cheaper "organic" pads on there; but I thought orgs were quieter.
Hey are you sure the tires aren't rubbing against anything, like suspension parts, or inner wheel wells?
