Eliminating Power Steering: Help needed w/in
What are my options as far as steering boxes go if I want to eliminate my power steering. Having a vortech makes it a BIG pain in the *** to run a power steering pump.
Id much rather just have manual steering.
Ive heard S-10 steering boxes will work. Ive also SEEN a flaming river box on a GTA but didnt get a chance to talk to the guy about it when I saw it.
Anyone shed some light?
Thanks

i'm in the process of doing it too. i was told at a junk yard the s10 box would work, just can't find one except for rebuilt ones. as near as i can tell most 4 banger s10 had manual steering. they're lot harder to find than i thought. i'll end up buying a new box when i get around to it.

I found mine in an 87 S-15. It's a direct bolt-in however I kept the camaro's pitman arm. The angle is slightly different but the S10/S15 arm will work if you don't have a pitman arm puller.

I've often heard the S-10 has a different ratio, which will hurt handleing if you like the curves, but doesn't matter for drag.
I had a roomate in college that just removed the resevoir/pump from the car and just left the power unit on the car with no fluid. He drove it that way for over two years.

A manual box will always have a different ratio than a power box. If it wasn't then the power box would just need the oil removed. No oil will eventually ruin the box. The power box has a different ratio because it uses hydraulic pressure to aid in steering. Since the manual box doesn't have this pressure it needs a greater torque multiplication to turn the steering wheel. Older cars with manual boxes usually had larger steering wheels also to help steering.

I think this is where the flaming river box helps out. I think it improves the ratio.
Im not real conserned about the twisties. My car has become a full on drag car.

The s-10 box will work fine. If i'm not mistaken your power box has 4 bolts on top. If it does you can use your steering arm. I had to use the arm from the s-10,my power box had the round retaining ring. You should not have the same problem I did. I also used the pitman arm from the manual box. The manual box I have gives me some serious lock to lock turning ratio. My skinnies rub the inner wheel well, easily. When I last looked in Terre Haute there were 3 left. You can call southwest automotive. Or if you want me to I can find out if they have any left.
