I'm curious about the same thing--why do you have to change the brake lines and the master cylinder? I thought they were all the same?

I believe the lines coming from the master cylinder will have the incorrect fittings and a slight variation routing depending on the application.

Master cylinders-- Between 82 and 88, there were two units, the J50 (disc/drum) unit and the J65 (4-wheel-disc) unit.

In 1989, GM used the "original" J50 disc/drum unit for both types of braking systems.

If your '88 t/a had drums, you wouldn't have to change master cylinders to use the '89 discs.

You'll basically be getting the 82-88 disc/drum master cylinder. You can verify these part #'s by going to places like http://www.wrenchhead.com and http://www.carparts.com and http://www.expressautoparts.com. I'd suggest buying it locally though; I bought a rebuilt unit locally and it turned out to be bad, so I just returned it. If I bought it through an online store- what a nightmare that would've been!
