is this bad for a new steering gear??

the counterperson at auto zone can't tell me if the s-gear from an '89 IROC Z28 has a better turn ratio than the one for my car,it does have a different part #, however. he agreed to order it and let me twist it at the counter to see if it has a better ratio than than my stock replacement. my concern is that it might not be adaquitly lubricated for this type of test and may be damaged before I even install it.the '89 Iroc part # is 7843512 ratio unknown, the part # for my car,'84 TA is 7839897 2.50:1 ratio, thes are the GM #s from the dealer.how can I find out the turn ratios with out messn' with the merchandise?

forgot too add: will an overtighned rubber steering coupler put stress on the shaft bearing in the steering gear? it wouldn't be a problem with a lieftime warrantied replacement, but, who want's too do a job twice, right?
