Bump steer kit sleeve size?

I am piecing together a bump steer kit, instead of buying the over priced one from Spohn. What I am running into is what size do the sleeves need to be? I see way too many options.

I see this.
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Alumin...Inch,2087.html
and this.
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Garage...eve,35240.html

and each one of them has multiple options. Thanks.

What exactly dose this kit help with? Jerky steering while cornering on uneven roads? will you be posting your notes on making this kit with part #'s?

So you have seen the parts for the sleeves. Hopefully //<86TA>\\ can chime in with the length. Here are the rest.

2 Adjustable Tie-Rod End #91636055 Link.

4 spacers #94004016 Link.

4 jam nuts #1756046 Link. You will need 2 packages one LH and one RH.

5/8" shaft and hole
2 RH Heim joints #1750116 Link.

Optional
Heim joint seals #91001504 Link.

Ends up cheaper than Spohn, by a little bit, with upgraded parts. This kit is extremely helpful with lowered cars.

Re: Bump steer kit sleeve size?

you've got one LH and one RH heim joint...how are you planning that? are you using stock inner tie rod ends? if so, wouldn't you need two, either, LH or RH? if you're not using stock inners, wouldn't you need two of each?

Re: Bump steer kit sleeve size?

I would not ever use a non-teflon lined rod end unless you enjoy the sound of the them clunking around. In the steering system that couple thousandths of slop could start adding up to be dangerous as well.

Re: Bump steer kit sleeve size?

the tubes are 9", 9.5 would also work. you dont need a left and a right rod end, just 2 5/8 RH ones, then 2 RH nuts and 2 LH nuts.

Whatever threaded tube you use has to be hollow, and threaded about 2-3" inside so it fits on the inner tie rod, the solid hex bars with 1.5" of threads will nto work, i used heavy sweged tubes.

put the set together for 75 bux, but didnt use top quality rod ends. However, they dont make noise and are still moving after about a year.

Yes I will be running stock inner tie rod ends. You are right on the heim joints. I will look for some different heim joints and adjust the list accordingly.

Thanks for the help with this. Are you saying the first link listed will not work (Link.)? Do you have a link to something that will? I looked through the site and found another one, but it doesn't list the thread length. Link.

Re: Bump steer kit sleeve size?

Back from the dead.

I'm piecing together a bump steer kit of my own. Seems like most of the kits out there put the rod end over the threads of the stud. Seems like putting the rod end over a shoulder would be better. Of course that would mean running spacers then instead of jam nuts.

Thoughts?

Re: Bump steer kit sleeve size?

with everything tight, there is no play in the connection. the studs are typically fine thread, which is a tighter fit than with course threads.

if you want to use spacers and a 5/8 bolt, thats fine too, but you will have to drill out the spindles.

Re: Bump steer kit sleeve size?

Something else you'll want to do is run a safety washer under the rod end.

https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/pr...p?Product=3068

Its possible for the race to get pounded out of the rod end, dropping the ball. The results could be catastrophic so they're cheap insurance. You should be able to grind a side off the washer if you need more wheel clearance.

That is true, however I would still be more comfortable with a shouldered bolt in the case of relaxed clamp up.

Also, I believe pitstopusa carriers a tapered bolt with shoulder for use with spacers. No drilling required.

At the end of the day, I think I will just use the threaded bolt with deformed nuts.
