mini spool?

I heard some guys talking about a putting a mini spool in the rear end to help the car lock up better. But they said be careful in the rain. What exactly is a mini spool and how does it work?

A mini spool replaces the spider gears inside the carrier. It locks the 2 axles together so they will always turn at the same speed. When going around a corner a differential allows the outside wheel to turn faster than the inside one. If the axles are locked, usually the outside wheel will slide across the pavement since it's turning at the same speed as the inside wheel. This is hard on tires and axles.

A mini spool is a cheap counterpart to a full spool. A full spool does the same thing however it replaces the complete carrier making it much stronger. The mini spool can be installed in a few hours in the driveway since it just replaces the spider gears.

There are no full spools available for the 7.5/7.625 10 bolt and unless the manufactures have added new stock, the only mini spools available for the 10 bolt is 26 spline. The main problem being that our small 10 bolt diffs are not considered performance parts and because of this, parts like spools and mini-spools are just not created for them.

i see that mini spools are pretty cheap compared to new posi, locker, etc units. this may be a cheap alternative to traction. spend the $100 now and save up the the 9".
though used limited slips from 4th gens are plentiful and really cheap.

If you have real good tires,, a mini spool (or full) is a good way to strip the splines or snap an axle.
