Just completed 1LE front brake upgrade

The lastest mod on my '87 IROCZ was an upgrade kit from SS Brakes, the 1LE system with 12" rotors and dual piston calipers from PBR.

The install went fairly well for my first time making such an uograde. There were two problems however. First problem was that the bolts that bolt on the straps (the piece of metal that the calipers are bolted to) interfered with the rotor. The fix was not to use the lock washer and put red loctite on these bolts. The second problem was that SS Brakes sent me banjo bolts (the bolts the bolt on the brake line at the calipers) of the wrong thread. The fix was to go down to my local AutoZone and buy the correct banjo bolts. Each bolt was about $2.35, the most expensive small bolts that I have ever purchased!

If anyone is thinking about doing this upgrade, I can assure you that you can most likely do the upgrade yourself to save some bucks on labor.

The objective for this upgrade is to make better use of the 2400rpm stall converter. I'm hoping that at the dragstrip, I will be able to stall the converter out at a higher rpm than 1500rpm, which I was limited to with the OE brakes.

Hey doc,got a couple of questions??
I am looking into this upgrade for my z,how much did it cost you? and did the system come with stainless braided brake hoses? Otherwise sounds like a straight forward upgrade, which I like to hear. Thanks for any info, greatly appreciate it.

onebad82z,

The upgrade kit cost me about $980, but there is a core charge for the spindles, something like $60. If and when I return the stock spindles, I will get that money back. So if I keep my OE spindles the kit cost me about $1075 including shipping.

The kit does NOT have steel braided brake hoses, but new rubber ones which go from the metal line at the wall to the caliper.

BTW, the rotors are slotted, but not drilled.

I intend to buy and install the steel braided brake line kit from Russel sometime latter. I'm down on money after paying for the brake upgrade kit. The brakes lines will have to wait for awhile.

What kind of results did you get? Pedal effort, fade, stopping distance, etc.?

I really cant answer your questions right now, due to the fact that the car is not insured to be on the road yet. Three more weeks to go.

However, I have a long driveway and simply drive back and forth. The brake pedal is very firm and I made several low speed stops. I did attempt to see at what speed that I can stall out the TC, but I was disappointed when I got only about 200 more rpm out of the TC as compared to before the upgrade. Of course the pads are not bedded in yet, so the brakes should get better with a little driving on the street.
