Broke a Spohn Torque Arm

Broke a Spohn Torque Arm

So I was at the track last night and on the 3rd run I seemed to have broken my so called "bullet-proof" transmission mounted torque arm

I had a total of 6 runs on the thing with 60' on average about 1.83s with one run in the 1.6s, nothing really to call home to mommy about.

Looks like it failed on the weld as you will see in the pic's. Not sure how I'll go about fixing this and making it stronger, maybe I'll have it welded up again and then have another tube welded over top to give it more rigidity.

See if Spohn will stand behind their work. Otherwise, weld it back up, just do it right this time.

Wow that sucks. I would absolutely call them and tell them about it. That broke so perfectly clean it was because of a bad weld (almost looks like no weld).

Looks like a very crappy weld, no penetration at all. My torque arm has been in the car for a few years and many trips down the 1/4 mile, no failures yet.

Yeah maybe I'll give them a call just dought anyone would warranty something like this.

Looking at the break there is 1mm of penetration on the weld, I can see why it would snap with any type of shock to it.

You guys think my LINCOLN POWER MIG 180C will be enough to fix it up, just got it little while ago still learning how to weld lol.

There is absolutely no penetration to that weld. The weld bead is still lying on there like caulk rope. is this stuff TIG welded or mig welded and ground down since it looks so smooth on the outside?

The way to fix it is to grind the weld bead off the tube and clean up the threaded insert. Drill a new prop weld hole and use TIG to weld it, make sure you get full penetration in this sucker.

I would contact them. They may want to take a look at it to see if it's a fluke or if others are like it. Also, if that weld is bad you don't know if the other one is the same or not.

If they wont warranty it, I think the MIG welder will be fine for it. The biggest thing is going to be to practice A LOT before doing this. If you weld it and it breaks again, you can only blame yourself then.

This is an example of the hole TwinTurbo was talking about. This is my Spohn torque arm that I had to shorten by 8". I used a piece of 1" thick solid bar to join the two halves, but just imagine the tubing adapter there instead. What I did was drilled a 1/2" hole straight thru so I had two places to weld. Depending on how deep the adapter goes in, you may have to use something smaller than 1/2".

I was kind of thinking the same thing with drilling a hole like that or either putting a nice solid pin through it, the back part of that tube adapter is hollow if that makes any difference.

From the product discription pretty sure this part of it was TIG welded but I'am not sure if it was ground down, I'am kind of guessing not from looking at it.

As others have stated, that weld is clearly faulty, Spohn should not balk at replacing that part. If they won't replace it, then I think that speaks volumes about their customer service and I would never do business with them again.

Well just got some good news, just got off the phone with Spohn performance and they are going to send me out a new torque arm Nice to see a company standing behind their product!

I personally like Spohn products, but with that said, this should not happen. I would hope they are tesearching all products made that day buy that employee and are being retro active in warning clients about other possible failures. A breakage like that could easily kill someone.

Sorry I can't, they are paying for the shipping back of the broke one, they want to have a look at what went wrong with it. Basically 2 minutes after I sent in my pic's of it they called me back so it was a concern to them and something out of the norm.
