What does Zinc plating do, if anything, to a brake rotor?

What does Zinc plating do, if anything, to a brake rotor?

? I might be getting some Baer rotors for my rear end, and the "Zinc, Crossdrill, and Slot" option is $120, I'm wondering what I'm paying for.
I also noticed that some companies Cad plate their discs. The purpose of this?

Go look at your stock, cast iron rotors. See how nasty, rusty looking they are?

That's what the plating is for, to prevent that and keep them looking good. It is purely cosmetic.

Yes, but nothing (short of making the rotors out of something other than iron or steel) will do anything to stop the actual braking surface from looking rusty.
