rubber spring isolators (front), are they neccessary?

it seems like a pita just to get the front springs back in place where they belong, how is that rubber ring supposed to stat put while the spring is being cram-jammed back up there? can anyone tell me what harm it could do to leave these out while re-installing the springs, besides rubbing, and making some noise.

The springs will shift around and make clunking noises all the time. This can be veary irratating.

tape them to the spring with some electrical tape. this is what i've done, and subsequently read in several magazines.

thanks fella's, I lost one too and I'm not sure how long it's been missing. I just ordered the stock rubber isolators today (all I could find ) so,I think the right thing to do would be to put them in with the springs. I just heard about the tape trick at the GM dealer too. could there be a way to prevent these from wearing pre-maturely?? such as teflon grease, like the stuff that came with my PST bushings?
