Sloppy Steering (High Speeds)

Hello everyone

I just purchased a 92 rs in the classifieds section, and the car is beautiful, but it has a major issue that makes me a bit afraid to drive it right now.

The steering wheel is straight, and I don't recall feeling too much play in it while going straight, but when I switch lanes (for example, I change to the right lane), I often feel the car want to pull itself in that direction (right). It does the same thing when switching into the left lanes.

Driving at lower speeds 1-30~mph I don't feel this really, but anything above that, especially at 70mph, the car wants to pull itself so hard when i switch lanes, it kinda scares me.

I have no experience with the older style gearboxes (recirculating worm gearbox?) with pitman/idler arms, so does anyone have a clue what to do, any tests to take? adjustments? parts to replace?

Thanks in advance

Wore out front steering parts...replace everything including ball joints except the pitman arm (not a wear item)... Picture of required parts..

Is that a picture of an idler arm, center link, and 4 tie rod ends?

Yes, plus the adjusters..Not shown are the ball joints. I would go with that Hawk kit + ball joints. Spohn made that kit and I installed the parts with NO problems (note! you will need a front end alignment.i

Alright, what do you think about the steering box?

Since Hawks requires you to call for a shipping estimate I am not ordering from them. I don't like sites that require you to register before you can figure out pointless information.
I'll search around to see what I can find, but with worn steering components, I shouldn't have an issue driving the car for now will I? I know wheel bearing failures are dangerous (wheel falls off), but unless a tierod snaps, I should be fine for now, no?

Thanks again

I have a 23yr old steering box that I have NOT touched, so draw your own conclusion. Condition of the steering on your car, my opinion ...Don't take any long trips.
Also, you may find cheaper parts. But read some Posts on this subject and you will find people had varied results with some of the parts. Again, I like one stop shopping regardless of the shipping costs

Erm.. if you have an upper or lower balljoint go, you will have quite the experience. If you are concerned, jack it up at the K member and check all the components for excessive play. If you've never checked this sort of thing before, have someone who knows what they are looking at help you, or read the Chiltons/Haynes manual.. they usually have a tolerance of sorts to compare to.

and I've never seen a tie rod snap without an accident being involved.. i _have_ seen ball joints go bang, both on the lift while being greased, and while making a corner into a gas station. Course, when that happens your wheel doesn't fall _off_, it simply flops sideways. Still no fun.
