The steering box on my camaro is leaking pretty bad. I was wanting to get an IROC box from a junk yard because I am running 16's and I've hear these have stops that other third gen boxes don't have. I was just wanting to know if their are any differences in the feel or ratio of any third gen steering boxes? Is there any markings that tell the ratio or what it came from? Would it be worth it to try to fix the box I have? I have heard that you can replace a gasket somewhere on the box, but does this usually work?
A quick ratio steering box has a large W cast into the housing. You'll have to search the archives for actual casting numbers.
You can easily replace the seals. It's usually the input shaft seal or the sector shaft (output) seal that's leaking. Both can be easily changed however the output seal needs a pitman arm puller.
