My brakes are terrible and make a wooshing sound!

I went to the movies today and i came out and my brakes were horrible. When i press down the pedal it makes a loud wooshing sound and i have to press down the pedal a long time before i actually have to stop. And when i went to mcdonalds i noticed when its in park and i hit the brakes the engine starts stumbling but never dies like i have a lumpy cam and returns to normal when i let off.
Any suggetions?
Thanks

Check the booster and the vacuum lines leading to it. Sounds like the booster has a leak in it and when you hit the brakes not only do you lose the assist from it, you create a vacuum leak that causes the engine stumble.

Yup, that would be the brake booster... the big thing about a foot in diameter that sits behind the master cylinder. Not too hard to replace, pop the MC off of it (you should be able to do that wiothout unhooking the brake lines), then 4 nuts under the dash.
