crazy shake?

I currently have an 85 Camaro that has a little shake to it. At about 40 you can sort of feel it and at 70 it rattles the dash. This is my daily driver and I'd like to fix it...problem is I can't figure it out. I rims and tires mounted and balanced...didn't help. Put on completely different set of rims and tires and it still shakes, but not on the other one. So basically I've eliminated tires and rims. Any other possibilities? Rotors, suspension, alignment?

What gear ratio do you have? Its odd that it happens at 40. The steel driveshaft it known to not be accurately balanced. That might be your problem. If you have 3:73's like i do, the vibration occurs early. You might also have a bent axle. What condition are the tires in? Have you locked up the front brakes badly? Could yo have a flat spot on them?

the tires are in near new condition..but like I said I've switched all rims and tires and hasn't eliminated the problem...another suggestion brought up to me was a toe in condition on both sides and it shakes when the tires are being pushed like a plow over the pavement. The front tires seem to maybe have a slight chop in the tread wear on the outside. But I don't want to pay for an alignment job if its not gonna be fixed.

I have the same problem. I have changed everything that spins (except axles), and I still have the vibration. I am 99% sure it is the axles, though. I bought a pair off an older car (87), took my axles out, compared them, they were the wrong size, and installed my old axles after cleaning everythying up in the rear end. On my initial test drive, the vibration was still there, but MUCH better, I was VERY happy. I got it up to 90 and the dash wouldnt budge. The next day while driving 3 hours on vacation, the vibration returned and now its just the same as it always was. I am going to be geting another set of axles soon that are the right size, so hopefully that fixes the prob.

I am fairly sure it is my passanger side axle. It appears to have been manufactured wrong. When you spin it, it looks WAY out of round. Also, from inside the car, the front passanger seat vibrates, but the drivers seat doesnt. When I am on the throttle past 60, the whole car shakes as if the vibrations are being sent from the axle to he driveshaft and upwards, but as soon as I get off the throtle, the vibration seems to dissapate and become more concentrated at the rear. I belive this is because during acceleration, the driveshaft is pushing the gears in the rear end, creating a more solid link between the 2, and when coasting, the driveshaft just coasts along with the rear end. I hope this is my problem.
