lowering?????

with the minimum of ground clearence why does everybody lower their cars? this doesent just apply to 3rd gens but I see it bieng done to everything out there, and don't give me the center of gravity song.I built a vette a few years back that would outhandle anything it came up against, would eatup any corner at any speed and was 5 inches higher than stock.I want to know whether its cosmetics or a real need-to do thing

Lower center of gravity will handle better. It looks nice as well, IMO. Usually the drop springs are also stiffer, which helps handling. That vette, sitting 5 inches lower, would handle even better.

350 with stealth intake, holley carb, 470 lift cam. 700r4 with .5 boost valve, vette servo, tci lock-up kit, B&M megashifter. Richmond 3.73 gears, powertrax locker, timkin bearings, synthetic lube. Custom 3 inch single into 2 2.5 pipes. 1 1/2 drop springs, 1 5/16 solid front sway bar, 1 inch rear bar, custom subframe connectors, custom LCA relocation brackets. Kobel ground FX, currant red metallic paint. Lots of other stuff...

the vette had big block front springs and a 312lb 5leaf rear ran 255x60 fronts and 275x60 rears with 74 454 bars(gymkana)and cheap delco shocks and every bushing was replaced. I live in New England where we have roads that are not flat and the dpw is constantly raising manhole covers and gas/electric access with all the potholes frostheaves and speed bumps lowering is the last thing I want to do

5 inches higher? Put it this way, if lowering wasnt nessicary then NASCAR, CART, NHRA, Formula 1, and SCCA wouldn't bother laying their cars down as close to the ground as possible.

ya'll can lower them as much as ya want but to me its just fashion, like wearing pants that are too big, they drag on the ground and unless you have a big number on your door its just expensive designer crap how many times a year does your car run NASCAR CART or F1 or should I say how many times are you going to replace your exhaust or ground efx, trans pan, ect. They don't call it slammin for nothing

Here is a for instance that will prove that lowering improves handling. Pick up the S.C.C.A. Rule Book and it will tell you that if you lower your car, you will move up to a prepared class, read : FASTER.
Not only does it make the car handle better but it sure makes a car look mean with a lowered stance. I love looking at brand new cars and trucks on car haulers coming from the factory because they look lowered when the are tied down and the suspension is compresed.
What everyone has to realise is that automobiles are a matter of personal opinion and expression. The little old lady at the stop light doesn't understand the passion I, and I'm sure you too, feel for Camaros and modifying them to meet personal standards and visual apperances.
What I'm saying is that you have to respect what someone else loves, I didn't say you had to agree with them, but respect it. A buddy of mine got pulled out of a ditch once by a jacked up Pinto with big off road tires. No one I knew agreed with his choice but we respected it once we were out of the ditch.

no disrespect intended all I'm saying is lowering is track stuff and exhaust systems, ground efx,and other things found under the car are expensive why risk the cost of replacement, besides that if you are going fast enough on the street for the lowering to be effective you are probably a danger to civilization.I'm doing an 86 T/A and I'm not going to lower it and I bet it will handle just fine

Lowering the CG is critical for better handling. Look at football players: They stay low when getting ready to hit somone so that they can get as much control as possible. Other wise, you'd be seeing sports players standing up straight all the time.

Its laws of physics man, you can't debate it. Lower CG means more control. It also reduces areodynamic drag.

BTW, I never scrape my undertray or any body parts of my car unless theres 4 people in my car and i slam the brakes just after i roll over speed bump. I've got a 1 finger gap in front and two finger gap in the rear (between the tire and fender).
