Would flushing out the old brake fluid give new life to my brakes.Does brake fluid brake down after a while?

Brake fluid should be flushed and replaced roughly every two years. The problem is it absorbs moisture from the air. This moisture has a much lower boiling point than the brake fluid. See the link for more info on the subject. http://www.hotrodheaven.com/tech/brakes/brakes8.htm

i use valvoline synthetic. not sure it's any better but it seems to wrok as well as the regular kind. it's suspose to not take on water like the old but not sure. the dot 5 fluid is bullet proff as far as water goes but it cost a lot and you have to do a lot of converting to use it. i've only did it once on a vett and put stainless calipers on and the dot 5 fluid.

Stick to plain old DOT 3 brake fluid from a good brand (they're all synthetic).
Our brake system was designed late seventies, when DOT 3 was the best.
Using DOT 4 or higher CAN cause all sorts of problems, like swelling or dissolving rubber parts,it is also a well known "secret" that DOT4 and higher has "thicker" viscosity, causing again all sorts of problems.
And yes change it every two or three years no matter milage, the watter it absorps, can cause rust inside the brake system, also it will boil, when braking hard, causing the pedal to fall to the floor,NO brakes!!!
