Changed the rear disc pads awhile back (86 IROC) and had no problems jacking the car up by the axle. When my son was getting ready to jack up his 83 Z to begin removal of the old exhaust system he asked where to put the jack. When I told him,"under the axle, where else?", he asked if it would "damage that rod thing". I didn't believe him till I looked at it. The sway bar is under the axle on the 83Z (rear disk brakes also). Which position is better for handling, under the axle (83Z), or behind the axle (86 IROC)? Or does it really matter. Just curious.

dont think there's much to worry bout. besides the sway bar, you have you lower control arms, shocks, and panhard rod to hold up the diff.
you should be ok, just remember to chak the front tires.
