C-Clip on rear drums

While my car was up on stands today for changing the springs and shocks, my uncle noticed that my passenger side axle pushed in and out a good bit and make a clinking noise.

I was reading a little here after doing a search and read that it could be a clip, but where do I get these?

Do I definitely have to go to a dealer for this and will they charge me out the rear? Pun not originally intended. lol

Thanks!

Re: C-Clip on rear drums

The axle should move in and out slightly but very little. The cross pin in the carrier (posi) keeps it from sliding in too far to allow the c-clip to fall out. If the c-clip was missing, the axle will pull right out. The chances of the clip being worn out is next to nil. Either the carrier or the cross pin is worn allowing the axle to slide too much.

The only way to know what needs to be replaced is to pull it apart for inspection. The axles are the same length on both sides. You could swap the axles around to see if the excessive movement is in the axle. While the axles are out, you can inspect the cross pin and c-clips. If swapping axles and c-clips to the other side and the same side still has too much movement then you know it's in the carrier.
