I don't know what size rim that tire should use, but I've always heard that for maximum performance, you should use the widest rim that your tires will fit on. On the other hand, I have seen so cars that look like they are using tires too narrow for their wheels. Obviously, I don't go into a store or restaurant and go around asking people if that car out there in the parking lot is theirs and then ask what size wheel and tire they are using, so I don't know if some people are just using tires that are too narrow or if that is what it looks like when you use the widest rim possible for a given tire size.

You can fit a 275/45/17 in all 4 corners on a 17x9.5 with a 5.5 backspacing.

With no rubbing.

In my opinion, the best size rim for that tire is a 17x8. The tire will tuck just enough to give you that slight overlap. Killer look, firm ride @ rated Tire Pressure. Ive got 245/40/ZR17's on my back tires and 245/45/zr17's on the front. Its a great combo although rotating is out of the question.

Most tire manufacturers recommend a 9 to 11 inch wheel for a 275/40 17.
The best fit (most balanced look and handling) is with a 9.5"-10" wheel.

you will need to grind a little off the tie rods for clearance.

17X9.5 with 275/40/17s will rub more than just the tie rods, at least that's what I've heard from most people running that combo.

Not with the steering box from a 16" wheel car and wheels with the right offset.

275/40-17:
Ideal wheel width: 10"
Will it fit under the front? YES!
Anything smaller than a 9" wheel is TOO SMALL!
Backspacing to use? 5.5 to 5.75
same backspace for the rear.

This information pleases me. I think 275/40/17s all around would look pretty nice.
