Steering boot

Does anyone know where I can get the rubber boot that goes on the steering shaft OR EVEN THE PART NUMBER??? The rubber boot I'm talking about is the one on the steering shaft directly bellow the brake proportioning valve. The parts store has not been much help and the ones I've looked at in the junk yard are as brittle as a cracker.
Thanks for your time.

If we're on the same page, the piece in question appears to be a part of the intermediate shaft. It has no separate part number (according to my Parts and Illustration Cat.).

Re: Steering boot

the part you need.all comes has one (1) part.

you can get one from a parts yard. under $10 keep your old part so you can match how long of one you need. the last one i picked up came from a chevy truck...wanted a new boot also. my headers cooked the last one.

remove.. you have to bolts to remove. one at the fire wall.. and one at the steering box..

you will need a 3/8 steel rod about 15" long to slide inside the end that was at the steering box. holding it in your hand you might need to tap it with a hammer. over and over. to get it to slide out..

or you could just install it has is.. if it's just has long..I have seen a few short ones..

WHEN YOU and if you use one part to make another.. add some moly lube so the 2 parts slide in and out better then before... it's easy...

on my Z28 i had all my stuff plated. thats why i took it all apart.. looks alot better now.

Re: Steering boot

Well articwhiteZ I was trying to avoid going to salvage yard. The salvage yards around where I live that I can actually walk around in to compare boots shafts etc never have any vehicles newer than 10 years old. I'm trying to avoid getting a boot that has been exposed to sunlight constantly they seem to get brittle quick (the cars rarely have hoods around here for some reason)

Re: Steering boot

I do not have all the info, but forklifts used boots that were near identical in size and design. Last one I replaced was a Monte (same as the Camaro) and was a forklift part. Was a lot better than my torn up boot and looked the same once installed.

The bad news is I do not know what to ask for. I happened to see it on there shelf years ago.

Re: Steering boot

O jeez an intermediate shaft is expensive and hard to find! The rag joint replacement kits don't come with a boot either.
The painter of my car was the person who ripped the boot. I had that all removed originally but he asked for it to be reinstalled because it was much easier for him to move the car around. I wasn't to upset about this at first because I was thinking of replacing it anyway due to age of a rubber part. I guess I'll go have to have a talk with him.

I would look in the Jeep Cherokee shaft or Astro Van shaft set up. These use u-joints with a rubber isolator. Both provide better steering as they eliminate the rag joint. The Jeep shaft is a bolt in where the Astro Van shaft needs some re-work.

The best Jeep shafts are from 93-96 vehicles. The rubber isolator has a higher durometer.

Re: Steering boot

I like the Jeep Cherokee route. I guess that would be any Cherokee model in that year range?

Re: Steering boot

I've had the best luck with 93 and 94 Grand Cherokees. But alot of different Cherokees and Grand Cherokees use the 1 u need. I had to file a small notch for the through bolt to clear. Very minimal (not much more than knocking the dirt and rust off of the OE shaft.
