Pulling axle, then replacing - how difficult?

I'm going to attempt to install 98+ rear discs onto my 88TA this weekend. To get them on I have to pull the axles out, unbolt the backing plates, bolt the new ones on, replace the axles, then put the calipers and stuff back on.

I think.

What is involved in pulling the axles? Simple, PITA, what? Anyone got a step by step?

Steve

It really isn't as hard as it seems. you pull the cover off the housing, rotate the diff around till you can see the bolt that holds the cross pin in, remove the bolt and pin, shove the shafts inward, and the little c-clips will either fall out on their own or you'll have to pick them out with a small screwdriver or similar tool. Once you do that, the axles will slide right out.

As an aside, if your axle is getting up in miles, this is a good time to consider replacing the shaft seals, too.

Had to do it before, to replace the rear oil seals....really not that bad....took about 2 days....heh....ok dont freak out.......reason it took two days was because the STUPID bolt that held in the connecting pin was broken! Pissed me off...had to drill it out, even then it wouldnt come out, so I drilled a slot in it, and spent about an hour unscrewing it out of the hole with a small screwdriver....would have taken like 2 hours or so. Toughest part is draining and filling the diff. fluid...messy...and smells weird (though you really start to like it afterwards).

Yeah, isn't that weird? I hated it at first, too. Now it kinda makes my mouth water. A little of it spilled in the back of my van when I was transporting a rear-end, and man does it smell good after that van sits out in the sun after a while... You open up the door to get in, and it's like "damn, where is that great barbeque smell coming from?".
