Roll Cage

Can anyone give me any and all maybe, information on all the spec. on building a roll cage for a 82 Camaro street/strip car? It, right now is just a thought, I havent any idea even the tubing dia. I would like to build it where it connects down thru the car to the front and rear sub frames, more strength in the over all integrity of the structure. main reason, ive never done it, want to do it and it would give the car more strength. I was thinking a cage for a mid 10 second range. All i have here is dial up connection and im having fits of rage trying to find anything. I waited 15 min to get this site up and sign in. Some day they say they will have it for my area (DSL) i just wonder if ill be alive still! Thanks to any who can help. Ron...

Re: Roll Cage

I'm sure someone on here has done it and posted about it. You can check out my album, I've put a 8 point bar in mine. Bought it from Hawks, can't remember name of company that they got it from. Site on the net, Dan's roll bars or something like that had a good write up on installation. I had it saved but guess I trashed it. This was my first bar install and was an EXPERIENCE.

A search on site would probably turn up something.

Re: Roll Cage

Mid 10 second car only needs the basic 6 point roll bar. You don't need a full cage until you run 9.99 and quicker.

If you want to build one from scratch, you'll need a proper tubing bender like a www.jd2.com model 3. Dies cost extra. An inexpensive bow and arrow pipe bender won't make the proper bends. Tubing diameter and thickness is available in the NHRA and IHRA rulebooks. IHRA rulebook is freely available online. Requirements vary depending on the exact design and layout. Specifications are the same for both sanctioning bodies.

You're better off buying a prebent kit from places like www.swracecars.com

Before you install a rollbar/cage, the first thing you should be installing for stiffness is a set of subframe connectors.

Re: Roll Cage

S@W is who mine came from. Thanks, couldn't remember. Fit great just didn't like they're idea for mounting to floor pan at bottom of hoop. I cut the open area out and mounted mine to the rear control arm brackets with the plates they sent.

Re: Roll Cage

I ran the competition engineering 6 point for my car, it took around two 10 hour days after the floor was prepped and all the seam sealer removed and interior. This was using a 4.5" grinder and a sawzall, that took much longer than a proper tube notcher, but this was done on a shoe string budget not anything fancy. Still works just the same. Saving toilet paper rolls works great for cutting with scissors to match the notch shape you need to grind out then transferring it to the pipe with a sharpie marker. Saved a lot of time over just "guessing"

Re: Roll Cage

I did all my notches with a disk grinder as well. You can also use a chop saw if you have one available.

Re: Roll Cage

I did the Jegster 10 point - reasonably priced and install was straighforward - I would really try a pre bent kit as some have said

recently added pieces to make it a 12 point and extended the anchor points on the main hoop from the floor pan plates to a mini cross member I fabbed in and tied it to the subframe connectors
