alignment question

i hope this is the correct place for this thread, but it made the most sense. i recently swapped k members to an aftermarket tubular one and it threw my alignment way out of wack. the camber was positive (top of the tires were pushed out). I was unsure whether the factory strut mounts would have enough adjustment and didnt want to pay for an alignment if it wouldnt work.

So i got the bright idea to adjust them myself using a level. this just seems too easy a solution, will this really work? im not too worried about wearing out the front tires as i dont want to keep them on for too long. i only adjusted 1 side for right now just to see how it would work. i did this on the ground so it was a little hard to get it close to where i wanted. anything else i should try and adjust?

Re: alignment question

did you move the strut mounts when you changed the k-member? the camber should not have changed that much. Whos k-member?

You can do it your self, but it will take time to get everything right, especially if you dont have a angle finder or gauge for reading the camber.

a professional alignment would be best, but if you can fudge it for now, go for it.

Re: alignment question

i did not touch the strut mounts when i changed the k member. its from AJE racing. i also changed the a arms at the same time.

for now i was just looking to get it close so it wouldnt be so so much of a pain to drive. i dont expect it to be perfect, just something to work for now until i get an alignment.

Re: alignment question

Did you get the coil over conversion as well? I purchased that setup about a month ago and finally got all 4 wheels on the ground last week. I cannot say if my alignment has changed as the motor is still out of the vehicle.

With regards to using a level, was the ground more or less even in the side to side direction? This could effect the overall angle (or position of the bubble). In gross terms: if the driver side was lower than the passenger side than the driver side would end up reading more positive than the actual level. (this may be splitting hairs, but oh well). Was your car in alignment before you performed the swap?

Did you happen to measure the length of both a arms (from the ball joint to the bushings? It sounds like if the camber went way positive, the aje a-arms are shorter than stock. (Now I will have to measure mine.)

Re: alignment question

no coilover conversion, and i did not measure anything before installing. the car wasnt perfectly aligned before starting it, but it was close.

i did put the level on the floor before starting and the floor was level. the level was in the vertical position at the time. i just did the best i could with holding it flat on the floor while adjusting the strut mount. i am only looking for a temporary fix here - maybe for another 2 or 3 months of driving the car 100 miles per week or less
