Some SFC/lowering/rear suspension questions

Hey all,

figured I'd make one thread instead of multiples! I have some questions I've been curious about regarding suspension mods w/these cars.

1 - This car is a long-term resto-mod project, and before I get into any major engine/transmission mods, I've decided subframe connectors are a must. I'm mainly curious about the skill level required to install them correctly. (I recently became an auto body student, so I'll be getting a lot of welding practice/learning more things about cars I don't know yet in the near future). Is a MIG welder what you want to use? or another type? How long should it take?

2 - My car currently sits on KYB GR-2 struts. If I was considering lowering the car 1'', would they be able to handle it? I've heard some people say GR-2's aren't the most lowering-friendly struts, but I'm also not looking to lower it much if I do.

3 - I've heard that the rear suspension design of the third gen cars makes hard launches put more stress on a rear end than the fourth gen cars do. Is this true? And why? I'm not planning on building a track car, but I'm still curious.

Thanks for any input!

I dont know enough about the other 2 to help you with them too much, but the 3rd gen and 4th gen rear suspension are exactly the same. Thats why you can put a 4th gen rear ends and T56's into third gens. The 4th gen rear ends just have longer axles which make for uglier wheels, but other than that, same torque arm setup.

Re: Some SFC/lowering/rear suspension questions

Not an expert, but if it were me (which it soon will be), I'd buy the bolt-on SFC's, install, and then weld them after the install - that way, you get the strength of the welding, but the ease of bolt-on for proper positioning/etc.

No expert on shocks, and what works well with lowering springs. I went with Bilsteins and Eibach 1" lowering springs, and I like it. But most folks these days use upper end KYB adjustables or the Koni's - but that might just be the "buzzwords" of the day - 5 years ago when I did mine the Bilsteins were the "buzzword" of the day.

As mentioned - 3rd gen and 4th gen rears are exactly the same - both run the same torque arms, LCA's, springs, panhard rods, etc.
