Power steering Gear Box

Hey guys,
New to the site. I just recently purchased a 1987 irocz28 350 engine.
I need to change the power steering gear box, but was told there are 2 different boxes and I would need to know what suspension is in the car. Problem is the cars rpo code is no where to be found. The 2 autopart places that I called said that I would need to know if its the FE2 or F41 suspension before I could put it in. I have tried in vein to figure this out threw google searches, reading forums and by calling a GM dealer where I live to see if they could run the vin. They say the car is to old. I need to get this done asap and cant till I find out this info. Does any one else have this car and know 100% about the suspension?
Thanks guys appreciate any imput.

Welcome to TGO, jlex.

The IROC would be FE2. You can swap in any box you desire. Here's some general info (I'd like to give credit, but I don't recall where I found the info):

• “WS” – 1982-1992 Camaro – 12.7:1 ratio (just like your Z/28, this may be the box that you Z originally had.

• “XH” – 1985-1992 Camaro – 12.7:1 ratio (this box was also installed on Z/28’s and other high performance Camaros; it has slightly more steering effort required than the WS box.) NOTE – I believe this box was used on cars originally equipped with 16” wheels

• “WN” – 1982-1985 Camaro – 14.1 ratio

• “WP” – 1982-1985 Camaro – 13:1-15:1 variable ratio (used in Berlinettas, least steering effort required of all third gen. Camaro steering boxes)

• “JL” – 1986-1992 Camaro – 14.1 ratio (base Camaro steering box)

Info on FE2, etc. (a search will find more, should you be interested).

Re: Power steering Gear Box

another question along the same lines...

if I have the JL steering box (and it's leaking) is there any reason I can't swap in a XH box?

would the hoses mount up the same way? any reason NOT to do it?

Re: Power steering Gear Box

I think they are ALL Z boxes. the difference is on the inside, not the stamp on the box
