My steering column is looking a bit rough. The steering wheel moves in and out about 2 inches right now and the boot on the column looks pretty haggard. As we're doing endurance racing, steering is pretty important. Can I replace that boot and relube the joint? Can I get it to stop moving around?

The bushing appears to be on the outside of the cap for one thing (and the retaining the clip appears to be absent). For pics, check the link below:

Yes that bushing is suppose to go up into the housing that is sticking out of the firewall and then a retaining clip that I do not see keeps it in place. That fix should take care of most of your problems.

That's kind of what I figured. Whoever did the racing wheel install made it so that it's easy to push the wheel in, so I imagine during racing, a little clip isn't going to hold us from pushing in during hard braking. Is there a relatively easy way to fix the torn boot and keep that joint lubricated? I'll take a closer look at it with the team next friday and see what we can do.
Thanks for the replies!

Now that I look at it again your spring clip is right there on the upper piece of steering column. I just come in from the shop and I have been changing my steering gear. My 83 does not have that boot. A good investment for you would be a manual for your year of machine.
