Has anyone replaced rear shock absorbers on a convertible? All the carpet is glued down and don't want to start pulling it up without knowing where to start. Anyone have any photos of the exposed shock tower? Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

Easy job. The towers are surrounded by a formed, foam cushion just behind the rear seat at the outside corners. Pull the seat down and then pull up the carpet covering them. If it is glued down, just do it gently and use a pry to lift it from the metal of the pan in that area. Typically, the carpet is layed in loosely behind the seatback without any adhesive. This is where to begin. Start at the outer edges and work in about 6 inches and you will find the cushions. No need to pull the carpet back any further.

 

Do I have to remove the side 1/4 trim panels to do this?

No, just the upper and lower rear seat. Once you pull up the center portion of the carpeting from the bottom you'll see the foam pieces in the pockets that need to be removed to access the tops of the rear shock absorbers.

Lon - I did not need to pull the seats on my vert. The carpet just layed down behind the upper rear seat section so it was easy to pull up from behind the seat and also easy to slip back down after the shocks were installed. Did I just get lucky?

 

On my '89 vert I only needed to fold the back seat down and pull the carpet back to get to the shock bolt.
