irs and chassis

So i found out when I get out of the corps my step father and I are going to make a drag car out of a 92 iroc z the town threw together as a gift for me. It's a beautiful chassis and shell and the local upholstery shop did the interior so nice I feel like I'm dreaming just thinking about it. So my firebird has become a new project. I live in the hills so i need to beef up the chassis as much as possible. Any recommendations? I've heard I beams before. Oh and i am making it irs. I want it to be able to hit a rock and stay level letting nothing get in its way. Basically with its awesome engine and transmission and i have a rear end on order I want this bad boy to be a street legal loorrs racer

Re: irs and chassis

Get the basic bolt ons.
Subframe connectors
Rear control arms
panhard bar
good bushings throughout
good shock and springs

You'll be good.

IRS swap would cost several thousand and require some serious fabrication skills.

Plenty of fast drag and road race 3rd gens out there without it.

So do you want a proper drag race suspension or a road race suspension? What works well in one situation won't work for the other.

The way I read it, he is building a 92 camaro for a drag car

and a firebird for a street car, askuing for street car stuff. I think.

Yea the camaro is a drag n that is easy especially with it sitting at a race shop back home. The firebird on the other hand has to b able to handle high speeds thru dirt n gravel roads. That is my new found challenge. We have unmarked roads n trails that r flat enough that I would try with a what is gunna b my toy.

High speeds on dirt and gravel roads? Well if your running shine, I guess thats fine, but sounds like a recipe for disaster.

If these roads are what you are building for, then again, Subframe connectors, aftermarket rear control arms.

Tall springs would be in order, don't get lowering springs. Get HD stock replacements, and some good shocks.
15" wheels so you can run tires with some sidewall.

Yea the camaro is more the style for this site ik but its simple already. 4.10 rear gear entirely rebuilt 350 buy my step dad bestman and their coworkers at the machine shop. Powerglide trans but a full interior all black leather with carbon fiber accents and Chrome window cranks door handles ebrake buckles screws bevels or bezels on the gauges which r carbon fiber Chrome roll cage and my favorite touch is the headliner is diamond plate with rhino lined edges just in case the seal sucks. Haven't decided on a paint job yet but that's gunna wait till I get to pull it out of the garage

Re: irs and chassis

I'd hate to have to sit in the staging lanes under a diamond plate headliner!

Not that the bird isn't the style for this site, just high speeds on gravel dirt roads is very dangerous. A girl just died in my area because her boyfriend was speeding on a gravel road lost control and went into a pond.

BTW, some punctuation would make your post much easyier to read and follow.

Re: irs and chassis

oops. Sorry. I missed that part

High speed on dirt and gravel. You don't see third gens running in rally racing for a reason. Chassis design is all wrong. If you want to use a third gen body, you would be better off building a purpose built tube chassis car.

Although you still see a lot of them on the dragstrip, third gens were really designed for road course racing (pavement)
