Recently went to the junkyard and found an '89 Firebird with WS6 wheelcaps and rear disk brakes. Pulled a front 36mm hollow sway bar and a rear 24mm solid sway bar from it. After reading some posts regarding WS6 suspension and steering boxes, went back and checked out the steering box from this same Firebird. Turning the steering wheel it went 2 turns lock to lock so I pulled it also.

The real question is that I also pulled sway bars, front 34mm hollow and rear 23mm solid, from an '89 TransAm and front 34mm hollow and rear 21mm solid from a '91 IROC. Would both these latter vehicles yield desirable steering boxes as well or would I have to actually turn the steering wheels to find out? Thanks in advance.

 

Hard to say, since there's no such thing as a 91 IROC... or more accurately, in 1991 the "IROC" was a Dodge Daytona (FWD POS)... GM's contract with the International Race Of Champions for, among other things, the use of their name, expired at midnight 12/31/1989.

My car has a 34mm bar in the front and its hollow.

 

Cool, I did not realize that.

 

Maybe it was a Z-28. Damn Camaros look all the same to me. I'm not biased. Hell. I pulled an overhead console out of an '84 Camaro the other day and didn't realize it was a Berlinetta until I lokked at the steering wheel. All I know is that it's a Camaro and it has '91 on the windshield and I pulled a 34mm hollow and 21 solid from it.

 

Turns out it was a '91 RS and its steering box was 2 1/4 turns lock to lock and the '89 TransAm has a 2 turns lock to lock steering box. Guess there is something that bigger sway bars indicate better steering boxes.
