Vertical movement in tilt steering mechanism unusual problem!
Right firstly this has nothing to do with loose bolts that hold the tilt mechanism to the column, mentioned everywhere. I have a different problem, symptoms are if i push down on the wheel it has some play in the left corner. The amount of play varies depending on which tilt angle is engaged.
I have already taken the column apart for the 4 bolt problem so please don't mention that as they weren't loose.
Trouble i am having is visualizing which part is worn that could cause this.
Also i am wondering if there is supposed to be some play as ive never owned one from new....
Its a mystery to me so hope someone on this board knows!

I have the exactly same problem with my '91 Trans Am. If I push down on the wheel, the play is in right corner, not left like you have. It shouldn't be like that!
I have also taken the column apart, 4 bolts weren't loose and everything was okay, so Im also a bit confused what's wrong with this column.
Only thing that shows something, is the ball joint. When i took it apart, the steering shaft parts had some issues... But the ball joint itself seemed to work ok.

Sounds to me like the same problem I had when I got the car. The pivot pins(I think that's what they are called?) that go into the tilt mechanism are ovaling out the holes they are mounted in and causing slop. Mine were so bad that one of the pins actually fell out. What clued me in to this was everyone saying that the pins are a bit of a pain to get out, which I didn't understand because one of mine slid out by hand. I had to have my steering column rebuilt. There is information on the forum about this problem too.

Here's a link talking about the same problem I had. I do not condone the use of JB on anything, but this is one possible fix If you are ok with it. Just be aware that you will have one hell of a time disassembling your steering column ever again once you jb weld these pins.
