Puzzling suspension problem

Hey guys could use some help with suspension. 87 GTA koni adjustables on all 4 corners with eibach sportline lowering springs. Passenger side front sits much higher than front driver side. The driver side is fairly low and this side rubs all over the inner wheel well. Passenger front never rubs, driver front will rub on a decent bump. Can't even fully turn the wheel without it rubbing bad. 245-17 tires up front. What the heck is going on?

Re: Puzzling suspension problem

First we need some background information on the car. Is this a new to you car? Did you just install the spring and shock package?

We need some of that to give you some solid ideas on where to check for issues.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Re: Puzzling suspension problem

The side that sits high probably has the spring indexed wrong or otherwise improperly installed.

The side that doesn't rub probably doesn't have enough positive caster.

Re: Puzzling suspension problem

Car isn't new to me at all. Had it for about 3 years now. Had all the stock suspension and it wasn't till after the spring install did the height go weird. I did the springs about a year ago and the shocks a few weeks ago.

Sounds like a spring wasn't indexed properly like Sofa says.

read up on how to index the springs, get the one that sits to high corrected and get a good alignment. here are some good specs to go by.

Re: Puzzling suspension problem

Wouldn't I want to bring the lower side up? The lower side is cutting into the tire when it compresses. I measured ground to fender and the difference from driver to passenger is 1/2 inch.

Re: Puzzling suspension problem

Raising the ride height is a different problem. You still need to make sure the springs are indexed properly. You can install new spring isolators while you're in there. That will give you another 3/8-1/2". What size tires you running? Also could be the extra weight on the drivers side from the passenger side being up. Either way, correct the unevenness. Then go from there.

Re: Puzzling suspension problem

The springs were definitely indexed wrong. Both were way over both drain holes. Got that situated and the height is very close now between driver and passenger and brought up the driver side some. But definitely much better than what it was.

Running 275/40/17 all around.

Glad to hear you got it taken care of, and thanks for posting your results.

Re: Puzzling suspension problem

Didn't hit any decent bumps yet so not sure. I still get rub on the driver side full lock when turning right ONLY backing up. Pretty weird.

Re: Puzzling suspension problem

Have you had it aligned? Since you've changed ride height, and suspension geometry, you need an alignment. Misalignment can cause tires to rub. Look at your a-arm bushings too. At their age they may be worn and giving you some deflection allowing it to rub when you back up.

Check your a-arm bushings, if they are bad, replace them before you get the alignment.

This can be a result of worn A-arm bushings as well as worn ball joints could also effect this. The slop in A-arm bushings will cause the arm wheel assembly to move forward int he wheel well (in essences it is extending wheelbase) when reversing forces are pulling on the wheel as its binding in turning. These cars have poor ackerman, and when you reverse with pretty much any RWD car the toe in alignment setting will cause the suspension to "climb". THis will make the wheel drop out of the wheelwell and make easier contact with the front fender liner.

Just wanted to update. All is good. Springs were indexed improperly. Thanks for all the help.
