front tires for drag racing

Hey guys looking at front tire/wheel combination for the front on my 83. Summit has 4 inch prostars pretty reasonable, but skinnies are out of my budget. What else would be a good option for the track?

You can mount old VW tire sizes on the 4" rims. Go to your local tire supplier and ask for 165R15 or 165/80R15 tires and see what they have in stock. This tire size is also very close to what's used on Smart cars. You want something in the 25 - 26" tall range.

Hey Alky, great website. I am interested in the fuel cel and radiator setup. Also how did you convert to manual brakes? Do you have an email or should we use this website? Thanks.

Most of the rad support has been removed. I did add some reinforcement under the rad. It's not the best designed system but it works well enough. The rad is for a Firefly, Metro, etc car. Designed for a 1000cc engine. The fan is also from the car. It's all the rad my alcohol engine requires even with the HP I make. A gasoline engine would need a much bigger rad. Fuel cell is a basic 5 gallon plastic cell. The outlet ports were too small so I modified one for a #12 fitting instead of the #8's that were on it. I refill the cell after every pass but I could get two 1/4 mile runs and get back to the pits before it's empty.

Manual brake conversion is by using a master cylinder from an S10 with manual brakes. Not sure what the piston size is but it works for me. The ports were converted to inverted flare with some adapter fittings and all the brake lines in the car were replaced with custom made ones.

To mount the master cylinder properly, an adapter plate should be used. I simply drilled new holes in the firewall and bolted the master cylinder right through the brake pedal support. The angle of the master cylinder changes without a booster. The mechanical leverage also changes. This is fixed by drilling a hole 1" higher on the brake pedal and fabricating a new pushrod that goes into the master cylinder instead of a booster. I run a manually adjusted proportioning valve for the back brakes and have it mounted beside the seat.
