Are all 3rd gen columns interchangeable?

I'm slowly getting the steps down on getting my '92 Bird road worthy again. I ruined the shaft that the steering wheel mounts to (long story) so I bought a used steering column. I believe its off of either an 87 or 88 Camaro. Well I mounted it all into the car, installed my steering wheel. Fits great. The problem I'm running into is that in the engine bay, the intermediate shaft wont bolt to it. It's as if the shaft on my steering column isn't long enough, and the intermediate shaft is actually about an inch and a half away from being able to even touch the two, let alone slide into eachother. Is this column not correct for my car?

Pull the shaft out of the column. It's "collapsible", and has "collapsed"... pushed all the way up into there.
