I'm completely stumped. Replaced my power steering pump on my '88 IROC. Things seemed fune, then a week later the pressure fitting at the back of the new pimp started pouring fluid between fitting and the line.

Got a little aggressive in tightening the fitting rounded the nut a fit..no problem, buy another new line. Replaced the line, another week goes by, and now the new line leaks exactly the same way as the new hose last week leaked.

 

Why did you replace the pump?

Remove the hose and look at the pump side fitting. Damage from over tightening?

Edit: These are o-ring fittings...! Are the o-rings getting cut during install? I've had difficulties getting these fittings to seal on my '92 Lumina. I've found that holding the line against the inside of the fitting (straight in) while starting and hand tightening the fitting will prevent damaging the o-ring.

 

The bearings were shot in the pump. I also suspect I'm damaging the o-ring during installation, and will try your suggestion. Thanks!

 

I always hate to see threads that describe a problem, but not a solution, so here goes..

After trying 3 different replacement hoses, and a second fitting from a different power steering pump, I went to a local hydraulic hose company here in town with everything I had, and let them puzzle over the problem for awhile. They couldn't understand why it was a problem, either.

One of their older techs said he wasn't really happy with the way the line fit in the fitting, and made me a new hose. He reused the metal end from the steering box, brazed an AN6 nut onto the metal line, then created a new rubber portion, using AN6 fittings from the nut all the way to the power steering pump end. They sold me an adapter, very beefy, that fit the power steering pump on one end, and male AN6 on the other. It fit very nicely, and more importantly, it doesn't leak. Total cost of the hose and adapter was $45.
