Indexing springs

Curious. What' the point of placing the tail end of the spring in between the 2 drain holes ? When their is a grove just past the 2nd drain hole that stops the spring from going any further . Is it to give room for the spring to settle?

Re: Indexing springs

The holes allow water to drain from the arm and not rot the spring and arm out.

Re: Indexing springs

The ends of the spring are not flat, they will not sit flat in the pocket and the arm sits at an angle to the spring, so depending on where the end of the spring is the car will sit at a different height. The indexing holes give you a way to line the springs up within about an inch, ensuring even heights and loads side to side.

It has nothing to do with draining water.

Re: Indexing springs

If I'm wrong I apologize, it's something I read years ago as an extra function of the holes.

Re: Indexing springs

Regarding the inspection drain holes. From my 85 shop manual:

After assembly, end of spring coil must cover all or part of one inspection drain hole, the other hole must be partly exposed or completely uncovered.
