Broken frame from gearbox (not just a crack)
Broken frame from gearbox (not just a crack)
I recently purchased an auto 92 RS w/305. The seller disclosed a leak in the power steering that I did look over. This weekend I was investigating more and noticed the gearbox moved when turning the wheel. After degunking the area I can now see what looks like the gearbox has broken into the frame. There is also a break and deformation in the pinch welds. Can someone confirm that this is what I am seeing? What does this mean for the car and how can it be fixed?

Yeah that's all messed up. You need to remove the box and rebuild the area on the frame that's damaged. That means either fabricating a new plate to weld into the frame section or grafting a section in from a doner car.
It's a "common" enough problem.
Fwiw, I'm cutting up a car at the moment, I could cut a check of that part if the frame off if interested.

Its usually caused by hitting a curb side ways hard or while turning and hitting that curb. After the fix, make sure you get a bar that ties both sides together.
