(9-Bolt) Axle shaft hitting inside carrier on reinstall.

Hey there TGO friends, looking for some advice.

I'm in the middle of doing axle bearings and seals on my 9-bolt. Everything nice and pressed on, doing one side up and one side on the ground to prevent movement.

BUT, in trying to put the axle back in, it's hitting on something inside the carrier and won't go any further in. If I tap it with a mallet, it just bounces back out, so the obstruction is solid. If I lift the other wheel and turn it, both sides turn, so it's definitely engaged with the splines in there.

Any ideas as to what's jamming me up here?

Did I press the bearing and collar on too far?
It seems like what I might be hitting is the other axle. So if I pressed it on too far, I'd hit the opposite axle before the race can seat in the tube. Hm.

I need the help of the TGO Hivemind.

Thanks in advance!

Did you take the carrier apart? It may be that the cone and the spider splines are not aligned properly, that would be "about that much space"

I haven't touched the carrier. Could the cone and spider splines have become misaligned despite my not having moved anything? Very literally, only the passenger-side has come out.

That would make the most sense based on how much stick out the axle has. You could try pushing in while turning the axle with a breaker bar. It should only need to move a few degrees.

Turns out you were right. Hammering the passenger side axle out misaligned the splines on the way out.

Its all sorted out now and everything is sitting as it should.

Thank you so much!

I had my carrier apart and I forgot to put the second axle in when I put the case halves together and went trough this. I did what I suggested, turning with pressure and I was able to get them lined up again
