89 brakes on older rear
I have an 89 car with rear disks, is there any way to put in a rear from an older car that used the older disks without swapping to older breaks? I couldn’t find an 89-92 disk rear.
my understanding ...since I've yet to find otherwise ..is that the flange on a disk car is the same ..reguardless of year .. you should be able to slap your 89 brakes on a 82 disk rear without mod ... anyone else ??????????????????

Actually your kinda right. The disc themselves will fit on any 9 bolt the problem is with the backing plates and the calipers. The backign plates from 89-96 are the same with the PBR calipers but anything 88 and under is using diffrent backing plates and therefore diffrent calipers. The two diffrent backing plates are not interchangable between the two braking systems but, the plus is you backing plates will fit on any 9 bolt rear. Hope that helps. i can understand i just went through this whole ordeal.

I have 89 brakes and a 9 bolt, I am building up a strong 10-bolt to put in but I need a housing, will a older 10-bolt housing work with the new 89 disk brakes? Like one from an 87 rear? Or what will I have to do or modify to be able to mount the newer disk brakes on the older disk break rear?

The vast majority of thirdgens have 10 bolts. 9 bolts are relatively rare. It's easy to put 89+ brakes on an older disc rear, everything just bolts up when you change the backing plates.

Their are some important differences to be aware of when installing '89 and later (PBR) disc brake set up on any 3rdgen rear that originally had DRUM brakes.
1) The end of the axle housing must be modified to accept the '89 and later (PBR) disc brake backing plate.
2) Then their is the matter of the now discontinued "shims" that are required to center the caliper on the rotor.
3) The brake lines on '82-'84 1/2, '84 1/2-'89 1/2 are different from '89 1/2 -'92.
I am currently working very hard on resolving these issues. So that in the end this conversion will be less painful and confusing in the future. As many of you will recall this is what I did last year on the 1LE front brake conversion. I am going to try and do the same thing for the 1LE (PBR) ('89-'92) or whatever you want to call it rear disc conversion.
