wheel hop and tires

what will cause wheel hop?

I'm curious b/c my car (rx7 and yes I know not third gen but you guys are great ) will do nothing more then just hop the wheels around if I dump the clutch at high rpms

I know this puts a lot of stress on the drivetrain and also doens't let me get good traction
what is it I can do to get around this?

also looking at getting some tires for 17 inch rims

what would be a good tire I can use for auto-x/street duty

do not do too much with drag racing but do auto-x a lot

Wheel-hop is a result of poor traction.
If you want to plant your meaties. Try,
1 Torque Arm
2 LCA's
3 Subframes
4 Tires
5More gas in the tank

Now im not very well versed in the area of suspensions but if you put a 17 inch rim on i think you will see more wheel hop, due to the fact that they will by necessity require a lower profile tire. Lower profile tires have less "crinkle" in them Im not talking drag slick crinkle, but they're more stiff. Low pros are for cornering tall tires are for straights. Work on your suspension, springs shocks... See if they're worn out and most likely they are.. try oem replacements or go with something performance, if that doesnt work try the above 5

thats my advice

I know, wont all cars benefit from a rebuilt suspension?
I'm not sure but does the RX7 Have a torque arm? I would think so..
He could fab up his own subframes, get taller tires or stickier tires
As for gas in the tank the RX7 is a rear wheel drive right? And is the tank in the rear? (i dont know)
Anyways...

Like i said im no suspensions expert...

Just food for thought...
BTW Apeiron, hows the weather in Calgary? Last i heard it was crappy. I'm flying back in on Sunday the third, we should get a group of Calgary & surrounding boys together for a meet

You've got IRS, right? IRS is handicapped a bit as regards off-the-line traction. There's not enough anti-squat for a high HP application and you can't add it as easily as you can to an F-body (typically by welding on a pair of relo brackets). More shock damping should help though, as might some carefully selected bushing replacement (your auto-x class rules permitting).

well guess I am going to live with it then
when the susp gets rebuilt going with smuch stiffer springs and poly bushings
guess that is going to make wheel hope even worse so will just have learn the best rpms to launch at

Re much stiffer springs: you'll need proportionately firmer shocks. Otherwise the new springs will simply overpower them. Consider adjustables if class rules permit. Sam Strano (he usually posts over at www.camaroz28.com) or perhaps the people at www.shox.com can even revalve shocks to suit your specific vehicle and the rest of its suspension.

The wheel hop vs stiffer bushings isn't necessarily that bleak of a picture. Bushing flex contributes significantly to wheel hop by alternately loading and unloading in response to suddenly applied loads.

You'll probably have to be a little selective with respect to which bushings you replace with poly. I'm not specifically familiar with the RX's rear suspension but all the usual cautions against using poly where bushing compliance is required for proper suspension action still apply (trailing arm bushings come to mind as one example, where in rear view the chassis twists relative to the hub carrier as the chassis rolls in a turn).
