brake pads
brake pads
I plan to get my car out of storage soon and the first thing I need is front brake pads. I know this has been discussed in past but i would like to know if there has been any new products or has anyone bought a set of Raybestos quiet stop? I hate the brake dust!!, any input would be helpful.
thanks

I've been running the quiet stops for about 15 months now. I love not having to clean my wheels. There is literally no dust.
Now, the down size. The brake fade is noticable. I haven't modified the brakes at all, so I am running the standard 1 piston brakes on the original hoses and rotors, but the brake fade seems worse than with other pads.
There are other things I want to do before I do brakes, but a Baer setup is in the budget by the end of the year (unless a green 92 convertible Firebird comes along...)
Don't get me wrong, for daily driving etc. the brakes are great. My girlfriend notices that my brakes are better than her's, but I noticed the difference from the "better" brakes immediately. I also noticed that I am unable to "lock" the wheels in a panic stop situation.
The wear of these is great, as I said I've run these pads for about 15 months and when I was getting a tire with a slow leak fixed about 2 weeks ago I looked and there was still plenty o' pad left.
Hope this helps.

How much did you spend on them? I think the last time I priced them they were like $80 a set. I would hope that they are cheaper by now. You said about not being able to lock up a front wheel, would you say it has decreased your stopping ability at all?
thanks!

Has my braking distance increased, yes, but only slightly, and only under "panic stop" conditions. Normal type driving, and while driving defensively the difference is minimal.
To give you a better example, your doing 75 on the freeway and and something jumps out, you jam the pedal to the floor. There is no lockup, if you needed to completely stop, the distance is increased as the longer the pedal is down, the less effective the pads are. Doing 45 in a 40 zone and some moron in an pollutionmobile (SUV) pulls out in front of you, there is no lockup, but braking is virtually the same as normal pads. There may be a slight advantage as you don't lose your ability to steer. It's sort of a poor man's ABS lol. The distance increase (if any) is not enough to notice. You just have to give yourself more room on the freeway, and remember that that oversized roll-over and play dead mobile IS going to pull out in front of you and drive defensively. Can't tell how I feel about SUV's huh?
I want to say I got mine at Pepboys for 65-70$ but it was a while ago.
I still have the Quiet Stop's on because I really like not having to clean my wheels. I had Brute Stops and even some carbon fiber pads and hated them. Oh yeah, there was snot on the windshield, but the wheels were dirty 20 minutes after washing the car, and all I did was back in the garage. The QS brakes disadvantages are far outweighed by the cleanliness of the wheels. Period. Oh, and they don't squeak. I would replace these pads with another set of quiet stops if I weren't getting bigger rotors and swapping out the rear drums with rotors as well.
